Michelle Rudek Obituary, Death – Professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the Analytical Pharmacology Core at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, Michelle Rudek holds a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Doctor of Philosophy in her respective fields.

Her research focuses on oncology (preclinical studies and Phase I clinical trials/early phase drug development) as well as unique populations within oncology (AIDS malignancy, and organ dysfunction). Dr. Rudek investigates the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects of anticancer drugs. Rudek Schock was the first of four children to be born to Jacob and Caroline (Berg) Schock.

He was born on February 3, 1931 in the town of Turtle Lake, North Dakota. She passed away on February 21st, just a few days after celebrating her 92nd birthday at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo with her family, friends, and the staff there. Her childhood was split between helping out on the family farm alongside her brother and sister, as well as working at her aunt’s restaurant in Turtle Lake, while she was also attending high school.

It was there that she became acquainted with Larry Rudek, a relief agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was an attractive and affable man, and he left her a dime tip for the five-cent cup of coffee that he ordered every day. When he made such a generous proposal, how could she possibly say “no” to such a generous offer? On July 21, 1949, Larry and LaVina were joined in matrimony in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Their first two daughters, Patricia and Pamela, were born in Jamestown, North  Dakota, which was also the location of their first house. After that, Larry was sent to the rural community of Tuttle, North Dakota, and it was there that the couple welcomed their third, fourth, and fifth daughters: Paula in 1955, Vicki in 1956, and Valerie in 1957. Paula’s short life was cut tragically short by hyaline membrane illness, which ultimately led to her death. LaVina mourned her loss for the rest of her life; it was something she never got over.
